Problem Gambling Awareness Posted On

There has been a lot of discussion about whether or not daily fantasy sports is legally defined as gambling.  The bottom line is that daily fantasy sports, just like gambling, is meant to be a form of entertainment.  Not every gambler struggles with problem gambling, but every problem gambler struggles with their addiction, and it affects many people around them.

Warning Signs of Problem Gambling

There are many signs to look for when questioning whether or not a person is struggling with a gambling disorder.  It may seem difficult, especially since, unlike other addictions, you can’t smell or see distinctive signs that this person has an addiction.

If you think that someone in your life might be struggling with their gambling, here are some questions you might ask yourself:

  • Is this person distracted, often forgetting about important things in their life?
  • Is this person having trouble with their significant relationships?
  • Does the person rely on financial bailouts?
  • Does this person fail to control or stop gambling?
  • Does this person lie to conceal things, especially their gambling habits?

Consequences of Problem Gambling

Problem gamblers may be facing increasing financial debts, failing relationships with significant people in their lives, receiving poor performance reports at their job that may lead to being let go, and increasing stress about the issues they’re facing.  With all this on their shoulders, they may have a poor attitude, as they may be getting anxious or depressed.

Another thing to think about is that problem gamblers have a higher suicide rate than people struggling with other addictions. That last sentence may seem scary, but below are some resources to help.
